Mathematics – Matamataig

Mathematics is rich and stimulating and develops logical reasoning, analysis, problem solving skills, creativity and the ability to think in abstract ways. Across all years Maths includes numerical skills, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, statistics and reasoning skills.

BGE Maths & Numeracy

Pupils work at Level 3 in S1 and S2 (using the TeeJay 3A and 3B textbooks) covering a range of topics that are vital to S3 Maths and beyond.

S1 S2
Basic arithmetic Algebra
Rounding Powers & Roots
Integers Factors & Multiples
Algebra Sequences
Fractions Angles
Angles Proportion
Co-ordinates Fractions, Decimals, Percentages
Ratio Scale Drawings & Bearings
Area Probability & Statistics
Speed, Distance, Time Presenting Data
Circumference & Area of a Circle Symmetry
Basic Volume Graph Sketching

Pupils in S3 work at Level 4 (using the TeeJay 4+ textbook). A lot of the above topics are included and extended, as well as new more complex topics such as Pythagoras’ Theorem, Similar Shapes, Circle Theorems, and Trigonometry.

Additional resources and links to useful websites are given to pupils in Microsoft Teams and OneNote.

It is beneficial for pupils to have their own scientific calculator. In school we use Casio fx-83GT X which can be purchased online or from the school.

Senior Phase Maths

In the senior phase pupils have a choice between Maths or Applications of Maths. Pupils sitting N5 & Higher have exams at the end of the session, details can be found in the links at the end of the page.
