Broad General Education

Pupils at Castlebay have the opportunity to learn both French and German, building on all aspects of literacy including, speaking, reading, writing and listening. Through learning a new language pupils can:

  • Gain a deeper understanding of their first language and appreciate the richness and interconnected nature of languages,
  • Enhance their understanding and enjoyment of other cultures and gain insights into other ways of thinking and other views of the world
  • Develop skills that can be used to enjoy work and leisure throughout their lives.

National 5 Course

The course enables candidates to communicate, to be critical thinkers, to develop cultural awareness, and to be creative. The following summarises the skills, knowledge and understanding for the course:
– reading, listening, talking, and writing skills in a modern language in the contexts of
society, learning, employability, culture
– knowledge and understanding of detailed language required to understand and use a
modern language
– applying grammatical knowledge and understanding
